Humara Karachi is an outcome of the project – Empowered Citizens for Improved Governance – executed by Shehri-Citizens for a Better Environment and funded under the USAID Small Grants and Ambassadors Fund Program. Through the proposed intervention Shehri- Citizens for a Better Environment aims to facilitate pro-active and informed engagement of citizens of Karachi in the functioning of city government and civic services delivery institutions. The project has utilized the exciting platform of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for improving urban governance.

The organization seeks to do this through development of a Handbook, Web Portal (Humara Karachi), Eco Map, and Mobile Applications. Orienting relevant government officials, elected representatives and civil society stakeholders about these products

The ‘Portal’ has tried to collapse within one virtual platform, a variety of information on Karachi and its governance framework. Information being made available includes:

  • History of Karachi
  • Natural and Physical Resources
  • Maps/Crisis Mapping
  • Government – Services Provision
  • Non-Government – Services Provision
  • Important and Credible Civil Society Groups, Organizations, and Individuals
  • Archives on Karachi’s heritage

Humara Karachi Eco-Map

Along with the web-portal, an application named Humara Karachi Eco Map has been developed and interfaced with the portal Humara Karachi.

The Crowd-mapping technique has been customized for urban governance context to produce two types of information sets:

  • Civic Governance Crisis – Reporting on issues such as, garbage, overflowing sewers, encroachments, trees being felled, etc.
  • Citizen Initiatives – Sharing information on projects that are generating community based solutions to a civic issue or academic action research.
